Construction Materials Testing

The Units That Pave Your Streets Must Be Tested Before They're Laid.

Construction materials testing - covering manufactured concrete units - is a mandatory compliance step on virtually all municipal, Balladiyah, and private development projects in Al-Ahsa and the Eastern Province. Interlock pavers, concrete masonry blocks, and curbstones must meet defined compressive strength, dimensional tolerance, and water absorption specifications before acceptance on any project.

HGL verifies that your construction product supply meets all applicable project and municipal specifications - providing test certificates that satisfy Al-Ahsa Municipality, Eastern Province Municipality, Balladiyah inspectors, and private project engineers.

WHAT HGL TESTS

THREE PRODUCT CATEGORIES

Full quality verification testing for every major manufactured concrete construction unit used in Saudi Arabian infrastructure and building projects.

INTER
LOCK

Interlock Paving Units

Interlocking concrete paving blocks are the dominant surface material for municipal footpaths, plazas, pedestrian areas, parking facilities, and light-traffic road shoulders across Al-Ahsa. HGL tests interlock unit samples from proposed supply batches for all specification-critical properties before acceptance on project.

Tests Performed:

Compressive Strength

BS 6717 / ASTM C936

Water Absorption

BS 6717

Dimensional Tolerance

BS 6717 / Municipal Spec

Unit Weight / Density

ASTM C140

Abrasion Resistance

BS 6717

Accepted by: Al-Ahsa Municipality · Eastern Province Municipality · Balladiyah · Private consultants and developers

CMU
BLOCK

Concrete Masonry Blocks

Concrete masonry units - both hollow (CMU) and solid - are the backbone of wall construction in residential, commercial, and industrial projects across Saudi Arabia. Structural block specifications require verified compressive strength and density to satisfy structural engineering design assumptions and building permit inspections.

Tests Performed:

Compressive Strength

ASTM C140 / BS 2028

Water Absorption

ASTM C140

Density (Net & Gross)

ASTM C140

Dimensional Verification

ASTM C140 / BS 2028

Moisture Content

ASTM C140

Block Types Tested: Hollow CMU (various void ratios) · Solid concrete blocks · Lightweight blocks · Load-bearing and non-load-bearing classifications

CURB
STONE

Precast Concrete Curbstones

Precast concrete curbstones are specified on every road, car park, median, and drainage project in Saudi Arabia. Municipal and Balladiyah contracts require curbstone testing certificates as a condition of site acceptance - HGL provides fast, accredited curbstone qualification reports that satisfy all standard inspection requirements.

Tests Performed:

Compressive Strength

BS 7263 / Municipal Spec

Water Absorption

BS 7263

Dimensional Tolerance

BS 7263 / EP Spec

Breaking Load Test

BS 7263

Visual Inspection & Surface Finish

Municipal Spec

Curbstone Types: Standard profile · Dropped kerb (wheelchair access) · High-speed road kerb · Radius kerb units · Transition units

Laboratory Testing

All required tests conducted using calibrated equipment per accredited methods. Results reviewed by Technical Manager.

5

Certificate Issued

Engineer-signed qualification certificate issued with full standard reference and SAAC accreditation stamp.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Common Consequences of Untested Construction Materials

01

Rejected at Site Inspection

Municipal and Balladiyah inspectors routinely reject interlock, block, or curbstone deliveries that lack valid test certificates - halting work and triggering costly replacement orders and schedule penalties.

02

Premature Pavement Failure

Sub-standard interlock pavers fracture, spall, and settle under traffic loads - requiring expensive reinstatement works, contractor liability claims, and reputational damage on public-facing municipal projects.

03

Structural Non-Compliance

Masonry blocks that fall below design compressive strength compromise the structural capacity of walls - creating liability for the contractor, consultant, and client on any project that undergoes post-construction inspection or third-party audit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions About Construction Materials Testing

How many units do you need to sample per batch?

Sampling frequency follows the relevant product standard - typically 6–10 units per 5,000 units for interlock, per ASTM C140 or BS 6717. HGL advises on correct sampling frequency for your project's total supply volume.

How quickly can you issue test certificates?

Dimensional and visual tests are completed same-day. Compressive strength and water absorption results are available within 24–72 hours depending on the product and required test age. Rush turnaround is available on request.

Are HGL's material certificates accepted by Al-Ahsa Municipality?

Yes. HGL is an approved laboratory under Al-Ahsa Municipality reference PA-F05-01 and Eastern Province Municipality EP-M6124. Our certificates are accepted by both municipal inspection teams without further qualification.

Can HGL test materials sourced from outside Al-Ahsa?

Yes. Samples can be delivered to our laboratory or we can arrange sample collection from supplier premises or site delivery points across the Eastern Province. Contact us to discuss logistics for large or ongoing supply programs.
